As a criminology student at Rutgers University, one of my assignments was to write an analysis and criticism of a Supreme Court holding within the last few years. We were encouraged to creatively select a holding with the goal in mind of picking it apart, teasing out its implications, and relating it to criminal justice and criminology.

I took the rare opportunity to cross my academic interest in criminology with my personal interest in video games, covering the biggest landmark legal case for video games in history. What follows is my exact paper, word for word.

Limbo is a game in black and white where all of the characters are silhouettes, there is no music outside of occasional rhythmic combinations of environmental sounds, and there is no text or speech. Officially, the only story prompt is, “Unsure of his sister’s fate, a boy enters Limbo,” but I think there’s much more to it than that. I think Limbo is a wordless retelling of Dante’s Inferno. Here’s why. MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS FOLLOW.

I haven’t posted anything since the articles about Fox News and Carol Lieberman attacked Bulletstorm and the gaming industry, which admittedly took quite a bit of energy and time to produce. I know, I know…

Interested in what I’ve been up to since then? If not, I’d advise reading past the break.

What Goes Into a Post

Last year I went to the Penny Arcade Expo in Boston, MA and it was singlehandedly the most epic, captivating, and incredible gaming experience I’ve ever had, even cooler than my guild-first Ragnaros kill back in 2005, using the super-powered gravity gun to demolish the Citadel in City 17, or the first time I fought the Emerald Weapon without Knights of the Round. I went to a Pokemon-themed bar crawl, listened to a great keynote speech by Wil Wheaton, met one of the creators of Penny Arcade, saw the Protomen, Metroid Metal, Anamanaguchi, MC Frontalot, and Jonathan Coulton, spoke to the boss behind Rock Band, and played tons of new video games. The entire time, I was surrounded by thousands of people who all felt similarly about the whole experience, so it was easily the most supportive gaming environment I’ve ever seen.

When I left, I was inspired.

You understand how IVs, EVs, and Natures work. You know that picking a pokemon for your team isn’t just about stats. You know how to catch and breed pokemon and how to train them quickly and powerfully. Did you know about the power of a Rain Dance team? Do you know what a mixed sweeper is or how to get through a Blissey that’s soaking up your best attacks? What about the utility of a choice band or a focus sash?

In sections 101 and 102 we covered the essentials of IVs, EVs, natures, and move pools as well as how to catch and breed pokemon that can grow up to be veritable fighting machines. However, with only an understanding and a collection, there’s still a great deal of work to do be done, namely the process of actually training your pokemon, or making steeled companions out of those adorable balls of putty!

Massive Updates Galore!

Many moons have come and gone since last I updated, nay, entire empires have risen and fallen since I posted about the wanton annihilation of inanimate objects, but alas I have some time on my hands and much to discuss. Where to begin?

New Avatar Trailer

There’s a new trailer for Avatar: The Last Airbender up at Apple’s trailer website. Click on “Trailer 3” for the latest and greatest, including a brief shot of Appa, the glider, some snazzy new bending, and lots more. I’m not sold on the acting yet, but this movie is certainly going to be a visual feast. Just for the love of keeping movies from going all 3D all the time, don’t see it in that godawful post-production 3D that they’re trying to market.

Again, The Last Airbender comes out July 2nd. Awesome or terribad, I’ll be there for it.

So I was watching Discovery’s Life series tonight and the second episode of the evening was about primates. It was a pretty expansive episode, as the whole series has been, but one particular segment caught my attention for a different reason besides my general fascination with animals: A segment on snow monkeys. The video for this snow monkey segment is available on the main page from the link above.
